HG Mechanical & Electrical appointed Flo-vent Ltd to design, supply, install and commission a full mechanical smoke ventilation solution for the Hammersmith development in London. The scheme consisted of three main residential cores, extending up to 16 storeys, requiring dedicated fire safety and smoke control systems to ensure compliance with BS EN 12101-8:2011 and current Building Regulations.
The Challenge
The challenge was to deliver a fully integrated smoke ventilation system across multiple cores, ensuring both life safety compliance and reliability while working within tight programme deadlines.
Scope of Works
- Mechanical Smoke Shafts across 3 cores (up to 16 storeys, including shafts 4 & 5).
- 5 no. Roof-mounted duty/standby fan sets.
- 55 no. multi-zone smoke dampers (BS EN 12101-8 certified).
- 3 no. roof-mounted AOVs at stair cores.
- 42 no. pressure sensors and 48 no. thermostats for ventilation control.
- Flo-vent Mechanical Smoke Ventilation Control Panel with monitoring system.
- Firefighters’ override switches, mimic panels, and manual call points.
- Full wiring, commissioning, certification, O&M manuals, and client demonstration.
Key Challenges
- Complex multi-core design requiring 5 independent shafts.
- Integration with the building fire strategy and fire alarm system.
- Compliance with stringent BS/EN smoke control standards for high-rise buildings.
Outcome
The project was successfully delivered on programme, with Flo-vent handing over fully certified and commissioned smoke ventilation systems. The installed solution ensures safe evacuation routes for occupants, effective smoke clearance for firefighting access, and reliable integration with the building fire safety strategy.
This project reinforced Flo-vent’s reputation as a specialist contractor in life safety systems, demonstrating capability to handle large-scale, high-rise residential smoke ventilation projects in London.
The impact
The implemented systems provide comprehensive protection for critical areas throughout the development, including firefighting stairs, lobbies and the car park, fully meeting building regulation requirements. Our mechanical extraction systems ensure efficient smoke clearance across all spaces, enhancing safety for occupants and emergency responders alike.
